5 Tips to keep you healthy this New Year

FIVE NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS FROM YOUR PHYSIOTHREAPIST

The physiotherapists at Edinburgh Sports and Spinal want to ensure that you get the most out of your sessions and give you the tools necessary to continue your recovery at home. We want you to fully recover and to do so, here are five New Year’s resolutions our physiotherapists recommend that will act as investments in both your short and long term health.

  1. Sit Less
New research showing just how bad sitting is for your health are starting to really convince us that a lifestyle change is in order. Limit your sitting to four hours a day, set an alarm to remind you to get up every hour or invest in a standing work station. Any way you can find to do it, this is one great investment in your long term health.
  2. Create Realistic Goals
Do you love chocolate too much to give it up completely? Are you really going to have time to exercise every day of the week? Make sure you’re not setting yourself up for failure! Your goals should be applicable to you and your lifestyle. Whatever your goals are, your physiotherapist will ensure that you meet them in a realistic way.
  3. Drink more water
Are you drinking enough water? The recommended amount is around 8 cups a day. If not, this is an easy resolution to keep that can make a surprising difference to your overall health. Staying hydrated has been shown to help with concentration, fatigue and even reducing pain.
  4. Find a physical activity that you enjoy                                                        So many of us fail to stick to an exercise programme because we don’t choose the right activity. The gym isn’t the only option. This year, try to find an activity that you really enjoy. It could be anything from golf, to dancing, to laser tag, to rock climbing. It doesn’t matter what the activity is or how strenuous it is as long as it gets you moving.
  5. Get that pain or stiffness treated                                                                    Even a small niggling pain or stiffness can turn into a chronic problem. You should not feel ashamed to take care of your health and seek out professional advice when needed. Invest in your body now and treat pain before it does get in the way of your day to day activities.

The primary role of your physiotherapist is to get you back on your feet. However, they can do so much more when you visit the clinic. Please contact us for more information or to make an appointment. Online bookings available.
