What is a Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a deeper, more targeted form of massage that works on the muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. Rather than a general relaxation treatment, each session focuses on the specific areas that feel tight, restricted or overloaded, based on how you train, work and move.

Our therapists use a mix of firm hands-on techniques and active stretching. The aim is to ease muscle tension, help you move more freely and support your recovery between training sessions, matches or long days at a desk.

What Happens at a Sports Massage Appointment?

Your first appointment starts with a short conversation about your training, your work, any current niggles and what you would like to get out of the session. Your therapist will then look at how you move before deciding where to focus.

Depending on your needs, treatment may include:

Your therapist will check the pressure with you throughout. Before you leave, you will usually be given simple stretches or self-massage ideas to keep things moving until your next visit.

Sports Massage or Physiotherapy: Which do I Need?

Sports massage is a good choice if you are generally fit and well but want to look after tight, tired or overworked muscles. Physiotherapy is the better starting point if you have a new injury, pain that is getting worse, pins and needles, or a problem that is stopping you from training or working.

Our physiotherapists assess and diagnose injuries, then build a rehabilitation plan around them. Our sports physiotherapy team works with athletes at every level, from weekend runners to competitive players. Because both services run from the same clinics, it is easy to combine them, and your physiotherapist and massage therapist can share notes on your progress.

Is sports massage painful?

Sports massage is firmer than a relaxation massage, so you may feel some discomfort in very tight areas. It should never be more than you are comfortable with. Your therapist will check in with you throughout and adjust the pressure as needed.
Follow-up sports massage sessions at our Edinburgh clinics last either 45 or 60 minutes. A 60 minute session gives time to work on several areas, while 45 minutes suits a more focused treatment on one or two problem spots.
It depends on how much you train and what you want from treatment. People in heavy training or building up to an event often book every two to four weeks. Others come in as and when they feel tight, or after a big race or match.
Most runners book a lighter session a few days before a race, rather than the day before, so the legs feel fresh on the start line. A recovery massage is usually best a few days after the event, once the initial soreness has started to settle.
Loose, comfortable clothing such as shorts and a vest top works well, as it allows easy access to the legs, back and shoulders. Clean towels are used to cover any areas that are not being treated, and your therapist will always explain what they are doing.
